Surprise Package!

This date night gives you an opportunity to be creative and giving towards your spouse. Everyone could use a gift or a “pick-me-up” every once in a while. Think of something that your spouse loves, favorite junk food, candy, movie, play, sport, hobby, team, candle sent, picture, and whatever else they love.

Now with your spouse go to a store like Target, Walmart, Kmart or the dollar store. Then pick out 3-5 things that you know your spouse loves or something that reminds you of your spouse. Make sure to put a price limit. This does not have to be expensive. It is just something that will be fun and show you care. It’s the thought that counts, right?  Also don’t let your spouse see each other’s gifts! Now find a box or bag laying around at home and put your gifts into separate boxes. Now exchange your “Surprise Packages” to each other. Explain to each other why you choose the gift and why it reminds you of your spouse.

We would agree that open communication is the basis of a good marriage. However, communication is not enough sometimes. What a marriage really needs to thrive is emotional understanding, or empathy.

It is important to share your thoughts and feelings with your spouse. Your spouse is not a mind reader. Even if you are not sure how you feel, you can and should share your mixed feelings with your spouse till you are both able to understand your feelings better. Sometimes we bottle up our feelings inside for too long and then you blow up all over your spouse. Sit down with your spouse and really open up and remember to show empathy!
