An interesting study on long term marriage satisfaction surveyed couples that were happily married for at least 18 years reported that "people who are accurate in their perception of their spouses are also able to respond emphatically toward their spouses."

In other words, if you truly know and understand your spouse, you will be able to empathize with them. Isn't that the goal? To not be caught up in your own limitations and frustrations but to perceive and love your spouse for who they really are?
